I'm an avid hater of the Pokemon anime due to all the continuity errors, poor character, poor plot and Pikachu's hacking of Pokemon physics.
But I decided to start watching the new season of Pokemon because what the heck, it's Gen 5, the generation that's believed to be the best since Gen 2.
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!
Well it seems the anime has taken a turn for the worse but it's bearable. Stay tuned for Renzo watches Pokemon: Best Wishes No. 2 with even more spoilers.
But I decided to start watching the new season of Pokemon because what the heck, it's Gen 5, the generation that's believed to be the best since Gen 2.
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!
So it starts with a bog-standard explanation of the Pokemon world for the new kids that got into Pokemon while Ash gets his complementary costume change. Said costume change makes him look a bit older than 10(which is stated by the narrator) and he sounds older which is a plus. So Ash's mom is taking Ash on a trip to Unova. That's cool. Ash's mom's voice actor sounds more like a parent than in the original series where she sounded like a generic anime woman.
They go outside to find Oak chillin' in a convertible with a shitload of suitcases strapped to the back and- HOLY CRAP! Oak sounds like he's at least 70 when in canon he's 50. imnotokaywiththis.jpg
Anyway, yay Team Rocket get a costume change to actually make them look like Rocket Grunts. At last! Anyway, Giovanni who sounds and looks badass is sending them to the Unova region, despite the fact THEY'VE NEVER SUCCEEDED AT THEIR JOB. Ah well, he's probably using them as a meatshield. And hopes to drive out the team running in Unova.
And so I find out the pronounciation of Unova isnt You-Nove-Ah but it's You-Nuvva. Bah.
CHEAP CGI PLANE FLIGHT IS GO!
And so the intro begins with cel-shaded CGI animation. The animation and the song is quite meh, it definately doesn't hold up to the first season's intro, Johto Journeys, etc, etc.
Oh boy, you know a season's getting off to a great start when the episode's title has a legendary in it, oy.
So after getting off the plane-boat Pikachu notices a MASSIVE THUNDERSTORM heading towards them with a blue glow, it's totally not Zekrom or Thundurus.
Ash on the other hand being the derp he is doesnt look at where Pikachu's looking and thinks Pikachu's talking about an Alomamola(hate the english name of this pokemon) that's swimming at the end of the pier.
Ash obviously gets excited and runs to the end of pier and finally notices the giant-ass thunderstorm.
And of course Team Rocket attempt to capture Pikachu, like in the first episode of the last bajillion series, Ash, y u no learn from this?
And Ash doesnt recognise Team Rocket cause they're in suits, got hats and have sunglasses. Ash, how many other trios of criminals have one male member with blue hair, a female member with red hair and a Meowth that has knowledge of machines and walks on two legs? None? Good, now learn from this.
No motto when they throw away their disguises? Meh, I dont like the new one anyway.
Ash commands Pikachu to use Thunderbolt DESPITE THE FACT THAT MOST OF TEAM ROCKET'S MACHINES HAVE BEEN MADE PIKACHU-PROOF SINCE THE FIRST SEASON. Does Ash have Alzheimer's?
Anyway, after the massive hole of continuity errors, Team Rocket brag that they're "Thunderbolt Proof". And of course the thundercloud looms above them and shocks them.
I couldn't see that coming, not even with a telescope.
Pikachu gets zapped as well and will probably have a repeat of the beginning of Hoenn. Great. He then uses thunderbolt into the cloud and you see a silhouette of Zekrom, legendaries in the first episode = no. Only the first series pulled this off successfully cause A) It was Ho-oh and no-one knew what it was and B) because it became a Big-Lipped Alligator moment after the Viridian Pokecenter until the Johto series.
And then the camera cuts to a tree or bush near where Pikachu first saw the thundercloud where Iris and Axew pop out. Iris says something then jumps off a cliff before grabbing a vine and swinging towards the pier. Who is she? Tarzan?
Oh and need I mention that she pulls a Sazh(FF13) and keeps her Axew in her hair? No? Good.
Ash's mom worries about Ash despite the fact he's made of rubber and is resistant to electricity. But hey, this isnt a continuity error, this shows that Ash's mom actually cares about Ash. Yay character development for the new kids!
After Ash stares at Zekrom the legendary pokemon flies up and vanishes, dispersing the thunder cloud. Well hey, at least it didnt play that much of a major part!
After dialogue about the thundercloud Professor Juniper appears and Oak tells Ash about her(with his near monotone voice. He either has no emotion to his voice or extremely little. Ugh.) then they start driving to her Lab in a 4x4.
They pass a herd(?)of Deerling and they failed at doing research because rather than the Deerling being in their summer form(which they should be because ALL vacations in anime are during the summer) they are in their Spring form. Not that big of a deal, if it's implied it's Spring rather than Summer then I'll let this slide.
A flock of Pidove(pronounced Pee-Dove rather than Pie-Dove) flies overhead as they pass some Patrats, Ash gets excited as a conversation about how rare Kanto pokemon are in Unova.
Oh I forgot to mention, since Pikachu got zapped by Zekrom he's been randomly sparking which Juniper wishes to take a look at.
They pass a flock of Swanna and Ash mentions that those are Pokemon they havent seen before. Thank you Captain Obvious.
Yay they've kept the Who's That Pokemon segment! Yaaaaay!
They pass through Nuvema Town to Juniper's Lab where Juniper does tests on Pikachu.
And so we meet Ash's possible rival, Trip. Wait... Trip? What a poor name... What, he's the same age as Ash yet he sounds alot older, that's... Odd.
It appears Trip is a Gary Oak 2.0 and pokes fun at Ash's origins as Juniper shows off the starter pokemon, Tepig, Oshawott and Snivy.
Trip chooses Snivy. Cool, a Grasshole pokemon for an Asshole trainer. Sweet.
Trip then leaves as Ash chases him to talk about Gym Battles while Trip acts a know-it-all.
Pikachu runs out and Trip scans him with his Pokedex and takes pictures. Then Trip acts as a jerk and then battles Ash.
Trip keeps on taking pictures and oh boy, this seems to be going DBZ with all the attacks being even more dramatic. It appears we have a repeat of the beginning of Hoenn's season with Pikachu unable to use Electric attacks. Jeez, writers, get more plot points.
Snivy then thoroughly kicks Pikachu's ass with Leaf Tornado. Do want. Definitely do want.
Trip then pulls more of a Gary Oak and taunts Ash as he runs to get help from Juniper.
Then the thundercloud returns and the camera cuts to Iris who's standing on a tree. Then Juniper confirms that Zekrom's trolling everyone and seems to take Pikachu's excess electricity as the episode ends.
